49. The Amalfi Coast

Enzo came to the hotel to pick me up at 10 in his coach
We were going to travel over the mountains into the Amalfi coast.

The views were spectacular, the air so fresh to boast,
Had to stop many times because of the goats.

Descending towards Amalfi, the water was so blue
The roads were winding, down and around with only the local few.
Enzo knows many people so we get a choice spot to park
Then takes me to the plaza and tells me, go here, go there, I’ll meet you at this mark.

I walk the steps up St. Andrews cathedral where his remains are buried.
Am always in awe how all the churches vary.

Walked past the fish market, the man showed me a freshly caught eel,
And asked if I wanted to feel.
The people on this coast are genuinely friendly and greet you with a smile,
I stop, walk and talk with some awhile.
I bought three wooden spoons for my children to remember
When I used to chase them around the house to smack them on their “fender.”
We stop at a pizza place and have a bite to eat,
The woman knows him so we get it quite cheap.

We travel the coastal road again and stop on the side to look close,
For a man 20 years ago made a miniature village of the Amalfi coast.
We stop along the road and Enzo has shown
The last surviving fishing family
and the home of Sophia Loren,
We reach Positano and the locals are planting flowers, so a picture we get
By a couple from Wisconsin, imagine that!
The descent to the beach is down steps past alley shops

Owners are repairing & painting, owned by moms & pops!

I walk to the ocean and meet some Australians and chat

Get down to the water and my hobbit feet are in seconds flat.
The beach is not sandy, but pebbles and rocks.
There's the wharf Diane Ladd was seen with waves crashing up as she walked.
When you are here, the beach is small and not so romantic
I meet six medical students from Thailand playing frantically.
They are heading home after an internship in Chicago
What a small world we live in, with places to go.

I watch several men quickly paint scenery in watercolors
Churning out income for when the tourists come and devour.
Heading back after a day of sunshine, water and conversation
I am exhausted by all the sensations.
We say goodbye with a few hugs & kisses
I know that this is another person that you meet for a reason!
