San Guiliano Spa
Instead of going to the beach in the rain,
Nicola booked me a day at the spa, for my aches & pains.
However, I must travel to the country by bus,
Ok I can do this, what’s the fuss!
I walked to the station, purchase the ticket for 1.2 euro
They told me to cross the street and stand at the blue sign
with a zero.
On the bus, a gay man
resembling Elvis said he knows the Spa well,
When I get to San Guiliano, cross the bridge until you hear
the church bell.
The bus drives on a road paralleled with large trees,
The strange limbs and branches are without leaves.
I’m dropped on the side of the road and cross the bridge to
the village square,
Much to my amazement, a beautiful palace to my right does
appear.
They were expecting me, they know I’m not from town.
“Come sta, Vittoria. My name is Claudia, I’ll show you
around.”
I put on my bathing suit and start at the thermal baths on
the outside roof,
This is a classy place, I think, not watching, I trip..…geez what a goof!
Everyone is nice, but my vocabulary is limited,
I feel small, awkward and intimidated.
Soon my nerves are soothed by the warm thermal pool,
And, I wished that I had taken more Italian in school.
At my appointed time, I am greeted by Paolo.
She motions to me that I should follow.
She instructs me in Italian to get undressed,
Hands me a package, to put on, I guess!
An itty bitty thong
that barely fit,
And nothing for both my itty bitty tit!
I lie on my stomach, there is no headrest,
The table is warm & soothing on my chest.
She begins the massage with salt and warm oil,
Circular motions that are stimulating, I feel like royal!
After this invigorating massage is done,
I take a hot shower and prepare for another one.
I chose the relaxing treatment,
And It was worth every cent!
How ironic, I thought as I listened to the violin song,
“Let it Be,” by the Beatles..how can this be wrong!
Forty-two years ago I wanted to die,
A pregnant teenager all alone, no place to lie.
Abandoned by family & boyfriend…no one to love.
Yet divine intervention came from above,
Stopped me from jumping to a fate I don’t know,
“Wanna ride?” he asks, but I say, “No.”
Angels disguised as hippies in a VW van,
He looks in my eyes, says, “Ain’t worth it man!”
The Beatles song is
playing, I turn, I hear it clear,
I change my mind, say “yes,” but no one is near!
I stand to the middle of the road, look up and down.
The streets are clear, not a van to be found!
I made my mind, right then and now,
I will always survive, no matter how!
So here I am, turning the page,
Older and wiser like a Tibetan sage!
Finish up my day with more thermal and steam baths,
Walked to the bus stop and started to laugh!
“Does the bus to Pisa stop here?” I say in Italian, at my
best,
“Si, every hour, more or less!”
Boarding the bus, a Little Richard song is playing,
The driver sings along to every word he is saying.
How ironic this world is, how small it can be,
It is really is a playground for you and for me!
